THE 37TH ANNUAL JEFFERSON LECTURE IN THE HUMANTIES DELIVERED BY JOHN UPDIKE Sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities
John Updike, Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist, short story writer, poet, internationally-known author and critic, will deliver the 2008 Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities. The annual National Endowment for the Humanities-sponsored Jefferson Lecture is the most prestigious honor the federal government bestows for distinguished intellectual achievement in the humanities.
Updike will present the 37th annual Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities on Thursday, May 22, at 7:30 p.m. In "The Clarity of Things," Updike will examine the connection between America's art and its ideas by posing the question, "What is American about American art?" Updike's lecture will complement the Endowment's new Picturing America initiative (PicturingAmerica.neh.gov), which brings great American art to schools and public libraries to help citizens learn about the people, events, and ideas that have shaped our nation's history.
John Updike is the author of more than fifty books—including collections of short stories, poems, and criticism—and is one of our nation's leading literary critics. He has published several books of art history and criticism including Just Looking: Essays on Art (1989) and Still Looking: Essays on American Art (2005). Recently, Updike has extended his views on art into his fictional work, chronicling the rise of American Expressionism after World War II in Seek My Face (2002). His new novel, The Widows of Eastwick, will be published this fall.
Updike's well-known series of novels about Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom have brought him international acclaim and national recognition. Rabbit is Rich (1981) won the Pulitzer Prize in 1982 and Rabbit at Rest (1990) received that same honor in 1991. His novels also have won the National Book Award (1964, 1982), the American Book Award (1995), the National Book Critics Circle Award in Fiction (1981, 1990), the Rosenthal Award (1960), the Howells Medal (1995), and the Campion Medal (1997). Updike received the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction in 2004 for The Early Stories 1953-1975 and the Rea Award for the Short Story in 2006 for significant contribution to the short story form.
From 1955 to 1957 he was a member of the staff of The New Yorker and has since served as a regular contributor. His reviews have appeared in The New York Review of Books and his poems in the Oxford American. Time magazine featured Updike on its cover in 1968 and 1982.
In recognition for his literary and critical work, John Updike was presented the National Humanities Medal by President Bush in 2003. Updike is one of the few Americans to receive both the National Humanities Medal and the National Medal of Arts, which he received in 1989.
John Updike was born in 1932 in Shillington, Pa. He graduated from Harvard College in 1954 and spent a year in Oxford, England, at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art. In 1957 he moved to Massachusetts, where he currently lives with his wife, Martha. He is the father of four children.
The Jefferson Lecture is the Endowment's most widely attended annual event. Past Jefferson Lecturers include Harvey Mansfield, Tom Wolfe, Helen Vendler, and David McCullough.
THURSDAY, MAY 22, 2008, 7:30 PM
Running Time: Approximately 2 hours with no intermission
Tickets to the lecture are free of charge and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Live Nation presents
BOB SAGET
Yes, Bob Saget starred on two of the most family-friendly shows network TV has ever produced ("Full House" and "Americas Funniest Home Videos"), but he’s also been an out of his mind, standup comedian for over thirty years. As anyone who remembers his scene-stealing cameos in "Half Baked," "Dumb & Dumberer," the Showtime series "Huff," his appearances in "The Aristocrats," or HBO’s series "Entourage" will attest, there’s something utterly hilarious about seeing Saget embracing his dark side.
From directing MGMs cult favorite feature film "Dirty Work," to directing and producing the highly acclaimed ABC television movie, "For Hope," to starring in the critically acclaimed, Paul Weitz off-Broadway play, "Privilege," Bob Saget shows no sign of ever stopping. His decidedly adult brand of comedy leaves his sold-out audiences welcoming Saget in a whole new light. Bob’s also the star of Jamie Kennedy’s and Stu Stone’s music video, "Rollin’ With Saget," which won a Fuse TV award.
Out on DVD everywhere still is "Farce of the Penguins," an R-rated comedy love story, that he voiced-over, wrote, directed, and produced, with producer David Permut and Thinkfilm. "Farce of the Penguins" is narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, and stars the voices of Christina Applegate, Lewis Black, Tracy Morgan, Mo’Nique, Bob, and fifty of comedy’s biggest names. Also, his hugely successful, one-hour HBO Special, "That Ain’t Right," is now out on DVD as well as running on HBO. He also recently completed his acclaimed Broadway debut as the ’Man in Chair,’ in The Drowsy Chaperone, the hit Tony Award-winning musical comedy.

DAD Foundation Inc. presents
MILLIE JACKSON & CLARENCE CARTER
The DAD Foundation Inc. has joined forces with the talented Millie Jackson and Clarence Carter to produce a fundraising event in Washington D.C. All proceeds from this event benefit the DAD Foundation Inc.
Millie Jackson is much more than an entertainment legend. The shapely, charismatic and multi-talented entertainer is without a doubt, a music industry icon whose oft criticized career paved the way for many of today’s forward female recording artists and entertainers. Not only has her lengthy career attracted fans from all walks of life along the way; it’s rumored that Bette Midler and Roseanne took pages from Millie’s high voltage explicit approach to sex, to enrich their respective careers.
In spite of being stamped bawdy, brash and bad, Millie is the epitome of performance perfection on stage. She has no peer in this department!!! Several years ago, she added a new dimension to her established legendary career by creating, financing, directing and starring in a ‘hit’ musical stage play that was based on one of her previous recordings, “Young Man, Older Woman”. During the play’s touring years, audiences (old and new) discovered that Millie Jackson was equally at home as an actress, as she was singing songs in a musical mesmerizing manner.
Her first record release, “A Child of God,” on Spring Records, more or less set the tone for what was to come with sexual and social hypocrisy from the transplanted Georgia native. Her debut album resulted in Millie being named ‘Most Promising Female Vocalist’ by a NATRA a now defunct radio and record industry organization. The following year, her single, “It Hurts So Good,” was featured in the Warner Brothers film, “Cleopatra Jones”. The soundtrack album resulted in Millie winning ‘Best Female R&B Vocalist’ honors from Cash Box Magazine.
For the past several years Millie has been doing her daily radio show on KKDA in Dallas, Texas, from various locations around the country. More recently she was inspired to record again. Rather than go through changes with other record labels, she decided to launch her own label and record the types of songs and materials that made her the outspoken, sexually liberated Millie Jackson that people loved and flocked to see.
